The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
