Debated US-backed Gaza Relief Group Ends Humanitarian Work

Relief activities in the region
The foundation previously paused its relief locations in Gaza following the ceasefire came into force last month

The debated, American and Israeli-supported GHF aid organization says it is concluding its aid operations in the affected area, following nearly half a year.

The group had previously halted its three food distribution sites in Gaza following the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel came into force six weeks ago.

The organization attempted to circumvent United Nations channels as the primary provider of relief to Palestinian residents.

International relief agencies declined to participate with its methodology, claiming it was questionable and hazardous.

Hundreds of Palestinians were lost their lives while trying to acquire nourishment amid chaotic scenes near the organization's distribution points, mainly through Israeli military action, based on UN documentation.

Israeli authorities stated its troops fired alerting fire.

Program Termination

The organization declared on the beginning of the week that it was concluding activities now because of the "successful completion of its crisis response", with a aggregate of 3 million parcels containing the equivalent of more than 187 million meals distributed to Gazans.

The GHF's executive director, Jon Acree, further mentioned the American-directed Civil-Military Coordination Center - which has been set up to help carry out US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan - would be "adopting and expanding the system the foundation tested".

"The foundation's approach, in which Hamas could no longer loot and profit from stealing aid, was significantly influential in convincing militant groups to participate and establishing a truce."

Feedback and Statements

Hamas - which denies stealing aid - approved the termination of the GHF, as indicated by media.

A representative of stated the foundation should be held accountable for the harm it caused to Gazans.

"We request all international human rights organisations to ensure that it does not escape accountability after causing the death and injury of many residents and concealing the food deprivation strategy implemented by the Israeli government."

Operational Background

The GHF began operations in Gaza on late May, a week after Israel had partially eased a complete restriction on humanitarian and trade shipments to Gaza that persisted for nearly three months and led to substantial deficiencies of essential supplies.

Subsequently, a nutritional emergency was proclaimed in Gaza City.

The GHF's food distribution sites in various parts of the Palestinian territory were administered by US private security contractors and positioned in areas controlled by Israeli forces.

Aid Organization Objections

The UN and its partners stated the system contravened the core assistance standards of neutrality, impartiality and independence, and that directing needy individuals into armed forces regions was inherently unsafe.

The UN's human rights office said it recorded the deaths of a minimum of 859 residents seeking food in the vicinity of GHF sites between 26 May and 31 July.

An additional 514 individuals were fatally wounded around the paths taken by United Nations and additional relief shipments, it also mentioned.

The majority of these individuals were killed by the Israeli forces, based on the agency's reports.

Divergent Narratives

Israel's armed services said its troops had fired warning shots at individuals who came near them in a "menacing" fashion.

The GHF said there were no shootings at the distribution centers and accused the UN of using "inaccurate and deceptive" data from the Palestinian health authority administered by Hamas.

Future Implications

The GHF's future had been uncertain since Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities consented a truce agreement to execute the first phase of the United States' reconciliation proposal.

The agreement stated humanitarian assistance would take place "without interference from the both sides through the United Nations and its agencies, and the Red Crescent, in combination with other worldwide bodies not associated in any manner" with Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities.

International organization official the international body's communicator stated recently that the foundation's closure would have "no impact" on its activities "since we never collaborated with them".

He also said that while increased relief was entering the region since the halt in hostilities began on early October, it was "not enough to address all necessities" of the over two million inhabitants.
