The Incident: A Prohibited Ride A gathering of approximately 40 people operating e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders subsequently reversed direction and rode through the downtown area and a nearby district. "This had potential for serious injury or fatalities," stated NSW police assistant commissioner David Driver on the following day. Police indicated they did not chase right away the group out of concerns for public safety but rather found the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the city gardens, at which point they broke up. Penalties Issued for Influencer On Saturday, police stated they had issued the US social media influencer known as the influencer, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), carrying a fine of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing. The personality reportedly has over 3.4m subscribers on YouTube and over 1.2 million on the social media app. Influencer's Comments The content creator spoke with a major newspaper recently following the event gained traction on news sites and social media, stating he regretted giving "bike life" a bad reputation. "I’ll probably take responsibility. It was among the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to come here respecting the laws and norms of the city. When I decided to do a public meeting it did not involve a ride-out, it was just to say hi near the bridge." "I did not know the area well, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we reverse, essentially, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to go back." National Debate on E-Bike Regulation The spate of electric bicycles on streets across the country has prompted growing calls for regulation. The federal health minister, the minister, recently said that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road." "Kids have done stupid things on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the harm that are presenting at our ERs are truly severe," he said. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things entering the country [and] police are granted the powers to take strong action, to confiscate them, to crush them, to destroy them." NSW recorded over two hundred injuries related to electric bikes in the previous year. However, in the first seven months of 2025, that number jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
